Okay, seriously, someone from M. Obama’s camp is reading this blog! Show yourself! She has made vast improvements in the consistency of her looks and has totally taken my advice. See below for my collage of her outfits as she tours Europe, hob-knobbing with British royalty. She is looking real fab (with minimal missteps).

(Starting from the Top Left and continuing in a “Z” formation)
#1Ivory tulle tweed coat with grosgrain trim by Thakoon worn over a black Michael Kors dress, paired with an oversized rose brooch
#2 - Chartreuse Jason Wu cocktail dress, paired with a black Michael Kors duster and studded Alaia belt

Remember all my hate for her Booger outfit? Where I said she should have contrasting colors for the inside and outside pieces? Remember??! She has done that here! Yay! The first Chanel-esque ensemble is simply fantastic. The lines are so clean and the contrast is so rich and elegant looking.  This outfit was done by Thakoon (love!) and totally brings out her trademark double stacked pearls and earrings. For the second outfit, even though the belt is higher than I recommended in the past, it works because of the black coat (note that the belt, also being black, further adds to the black coat’s visual benefits) - this prevents her body from looking cut off and maintains a streamlined look. This outfit was designed by Jason Wu (it’s an Asian double-whammy! holla!)

#3 – J.Crew Constellation sweater in ivory with beading and sequins paired with Dazzling dots mint green pencil skirt. She looks like Easter! I love the colors of ivory and mint on her. Even though I think an A-line skirt would have been more flattering on her, the J.Crew sequined cardigan and pencil skirt are simply delightful. The colors also make her skin glow.

#4 – Floral silk jacquard dress with black mesh trim and coordinating, reverse print coat (not shown), both by Thakoon. I think the sheath look is likely the consistent home run on M. Obama. Her height carries this look so well. This Thakoon dress’ print adds a little spice to the plainer design and modernizes a classic shape. I think her choice to not accessorize was also smart – it allows the dress to speak for itself. Furthermore the cut of the boat neckline would have made the addition of a necklace messy. (note: the coat she wore on the outside was predominantly black with a rose/fuchsia floral pattern – REVERSE PRINT is the way to go! See again my Booger bitching from before!)

#5 – Junya Watanabe argyle, asymmetric cardigan, paired with a full-skirted teal dress by Jason Wu and Jimmy Choo “Glacier” pumps. The press was ALL OVER this outfit – claiming the sweater, with its one-sided check pattern and asymmetrical button placket, was sooooo “edgy” and showed M. Obama’s willingness to take risks. Umm…it really was not that edgy. You’d think that no one had ever seem an asymmetrical printed garment before. And actually, I think it was kind of fugs. And yeah, M. Obama is a risk-taker, that’s not news. She risked a lot with all the unflattering outfits she wore in the past! Also, I hate that she wore green shoes with this. It was close enough to the teal dress and cardigan to look like a matching effort was made but was different enough to just not work. I won’t hate too much on it though because shape-wise, the outfit was fine.

#6 – Oversize white bow blouse by Moschino, worn with a black pencil skirt by Michael Kors, black cardigan and studded belt, both by Azzedine Alaia. This outfit could have been so cute without the cardigan, but especially without the belt. Here is another example of why the high-waisted belt does not work, but this time it is more about the shirt she chose and less about it highlighting her problem areas. The belt distracts from the adorable bow and the fact that it is studded clashes with the elegance of the white-plus-black-plus big bow look.

All in all, however, M. Obama’s European tour showed she is making some mini-leaps and bounds in her journey towards fashion know-how. Really though, this all could have been had months ago with my employment as her stylist! I think my next step will be an online petition!

Signed, Messiah of the Delighted M.V.

P.S. I realize this post was a bit dullsville, but I can’t hate where hate is not to be had. Therefore I will be searching for an additional public figure to criticize and campaign for a stylist position with. I was thinking Britney Spears (she so desperately needs my help!), but wanted someone who was a less obvious mess…Suggestions?

#5: I didn’t love the skirt part of the dress. It reminds of the black skirt she wore to visit the Queen. The full, gathered skirt isn’t particularly flattering. Anyway, this outfit seems to have caused a lot of strong reactions– love it or hate it.
#2 and #4: Very nice. You’re right– she does great in a sheath.

You’re right, the full skirt isn’t particularly flattering. However, in light of her past, it is a marked improvement. The strong reactions, though, just confuse me. The sweater looks like the stuff I see hanging in Hong Kong boutiques.

i hope our money isn’t going towards dressing her in these expensive clothes. i’m assuming she gets them for free from designers.
there’s a low ceiling on how good she can look till she gets her weave fixed,
